Walk in Changzhou City, China
Changzhou City (常州市) is located in southern Jiangsu Province, China. This national historical and cultural city with a recorded history of over 3,200 years located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River.
Changzhou is a hidden gem that rewards travelers with classical gardens, cultural heritage, family-friendly attractions, and rich regional flavors without the overwhelming crowds.
At the cultural heart of the city lies Qingguo Alley (青果巷), one of Changzhou’s oldest neighborhoods and a window into its literati past. Once home to scholars, poets, and calligraphers.
This beautifully preserved alley is lined with white-walled courtyards, elegant teahouses, and small museums. As you stroll its quiet lanes, you will find traces of the Qing Dynasty still alive in the stone carvings and tiled rooftops.
Just a short walk away is Hongmei Park (红梅公园), a peaceful city oasis centered around Tianning Temple (天宁寺).
This historic Buddhist temple complex, with its incense-filled halls and ancient trees, is crowned by the Tianning Pagoda (天宁宝塔), one of the tallest wooden pagodas in the world, standing at an impressive 153 meters.
The park itself is especially beautiful in spring, when red plum blossoms turn the gardens into a sea of color.
Changzhou is also a city of refined flavors. Local cuisine is known for its slightly sweet taste and elegant presentation.
Though often overlooked, Changzhou is a destination that offers a bit of everything: classical gardens, living history, peaceful temples, family fun. It will surprise you with its warmth, beauty, and quiet sophistication.
